The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Regulation Order Provides Better Compensation for Regulation Resources and Enhances Reliability Of the Grid

PHILADELPHIA, PA – NOVEMBER 22, 2011 – Viridity Energy, a company leading the next generation of distributed energy resource management, today announced its participation with New Castle-based customer Axion Power International (OTC Bulletin Board: AXPW) as an active regulation resource in the PJM Wholesale Market.  This participation has been made more profitable by the recent FERC regulation changes,  which reduced the minimum requirement from 500 kw down to 100 kw, and which increased the compensation paid to fast acting, accurate regulation resources.

“PJM’s implementation of the FERC regulation change recognizes the important role that market rules play in developing the industry,” said Audrey Zibelman, President and CEO of Viridity Energy.  “This decision strengthens the ability of customers to provide a service that enhances the reliability of the grid while improving the competitiveness of electric markets.  I congratulate FERC and PJM for their forward thinking approach, and our partner and customer, Axion Power International, for being on the cutting edge and prepared to take advantage of this emerging opportunity.”

A significant element of the FERC regulation change is that it provides better compensation for regulation resources, which provide more accurate and faster regulation service to help maintain reliability on the grid at a lower cost.

“We’ve long seen the value of demand-side resources in our markets, so expanding the opportunities for demand response to participate in the regulation service market makes sense and offers a faster and potentially more accurate response,” said Andrew L. Ott, PJM senior vice president – Market Services. “Our new minimum level for participation allows demand-side resources and other innovative technologies to cost-effectively enhance grid reliability.”

As a Curtailment Service Provider (CSP) in PJM, Viridity Energy will be managing the Axion PowerCube™ in the PJM wholesale market on behalf of Axion Power International. In this role, Viridity Energy will be responsible for bidding the system in the market, and then facilitating the communications exchange. Batteries provide quicker, more accurate regulation service than other resources do.

Our Power Cube, based on our patented PbC® battery technology, is a first of its kind smaller on line storage device that will be ramped up to higher kw levels.  In the future, our technology can be configured to provide 1 MW of power for 30 minutes, and beyond, for PJM applications. It can also provide power quality, back-up power, power smoothing and load leveling capabilities in addition to the initial demand response we began providing today,” said Axion Power CEO Thomas Granville. “We are excited to be working with Viridity Energy and involved in this important PJM project. We agree with PJM’s assessment of the emerging community storage market and see the versatility of the PowerCube further demonstrated in that market.”

Axion Power International is developing advanced batteries and an energy storage product based on its patented lead carbon battery PbC Technology™. The Axion PowerCube™  is a 500 kw/250kwh battery system with a pair of 100kw inverters that is connected to a portion of Axion’s manufacturing load. The PowerCube™ is a highly mobile energy storage system that can be configured to deliver up to .5MW of power for 30 minutes or 100 KW of power for 3 hours.

With the new rules in place, Axion Power will be able to participate initially in the PJM regulation market as a 100kw resource that will eventually be ramped to higher kw levels.  Through active participation in the wholesale market, Axion Power International will be able to earn new revenues through Viridity’s proprietary VPower System, which integrates, supports and optimizes the real-time dispatch of distributed energy resources and flexible load in the wholesale market.

“One of the most exciting elements of the FERC decision is that by reducing the barriers to get into the marketplace, systems will have the opportunity to grow and begin to generate revenue,” said Audrey Zibelman. “Looking forward, a similar system that has the opportunity to grow in the marketplace and increase to higher kw levels has enhanced opportunities for revenue generation.  As an example, based upon historic prices, a 1 MW resource could achieve a projected revenue between $160,000 to $240,000 on a yearly basis.”

CON EDISON SOLUTIONS AND VIRIDITY ENERGY
JOIN FORCES TO EXPAND BEYOND DEMAND RESPONSE

‘ENERGY OPTIMIZATION’
EMPOWERS END-USERS TO LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY
TO TRANSFORM THEMSELVES INTO ENERGY SUPPLIERS

Valhalla, NY and Philadelphia, PA – Oct. 5, 2011 – ConEdison Solutions and Viridity Energy, Inc. announced today that they are working together on a major, new energy demand response offering through the introduction of “energy optimization,” a first-to-market, automated, revenue-generating, energy management offering.

The service — an enhancement to traditional demand response jointly marketed by ConEdison Solutions and Viridity Energy — allows energy users to effectively transform themselves into energy suppliers (a virtual power plant) when market conditions present such opportunities.

Customers will have the ability to generate revenue year-round by taking advantage of changes in energy market prices. Specifically, when prices rise, energy users will be able to reduce consumption — and then benefit from ConEdison Solutions’ and Viridity Energy’s ability to sell the energy curtailment back into the market.

In essence, the customer opportunistically becomes an energy supplier, deriving revenues from its ability to limit energy usage automatically enabled by the ConEdison Solutions/Viridity Energy team. The marginal reductions in energy use are managed in a way that minimizes any impact on customer convenience and comfort.

“For many years, we have worked with smart energy users to help them benefit from price shifts in commodity prices or savings from energy management programs,” said Jorge J. Lopez, President and CEO of ConEdison Solutions. “Now, for the first time, these same customers can turn their energy management programs into revenue-generating sources by literally buying low and selling high. This offering brings in dollars for customers by turning users into suppliers.”

“Energy Optimization and dynamic load control represent dramatic new dimensions in energy management,” said Audrey Zibelman, President and CEO of Viridity Energy. “This service
implants a revenue stream squarely in the middle of a cost center. The concept is destined to widely penetrate the energy marketplace. Once it does, you will see chief financial officers of commercial and industrial firms nationwide seeking to share in the rewards.”

To implement “Energy Optimization,” ConEdison Solutions and Viridity Energy will integrate intelligent software with a customer’s building management system and other control devices. They will then control the client’s energy-consuming equipment, based on protocols previously agreed to by the client, when a demand response event occurs or when economic market opportunities present themselves. Customers will incur no up-front cost for the installation of the technology.

This capability reduces customer involvement, while enhancing performance. The vendors notify customers when modifications will take place and give customers the opportunity to override the signals, if they so choose.

At present, the Energy Optimization services will be provided in the states and utilities territories served by the following ISO’s: New England (NEISO), Pennsylvania New Jersey Maryland RTO (PJM), ERCOT in Texas, and New York (NYISO). ConEdison Solutions will sell the offering in conjunction with its commodity sales operations as a value-added benefit for existing customers and as a way to gain new customers.

Viridity Energy Developing Unique Program Using Energy Storage to Optimize Wind Energy at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals

By optimizing energy resources at healthcare facilities, Viridity Energy will help Jefferson adapt to power fluctuations, integrate wind energy and leverage a smart energy storage system

PHILADELPHIA, PA– April 12, 2011Viridity Energy, a smart grid technology company leading the next generation of distributed energy resource management, today announced a partnership with Thomas Jefferson University and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals (Jefferson) to develop and implement a project aimed at maximizing the economic and environmental value of its energy resources.  The two have signed a letter of intent to develop a large-scale energy storage project that will allow Jefferson to strategically manage its on-site and renewable energy resources through Viridity’s dynamic load control optimization system so that electricity at or near a Jefferson site can be stored for use when it best serves Jefferson’s operational needs and economic opportunities.  It is hoped that the system will become a replicable model for other hospitals within the Jefferson network as well as throughout the region and country.

“Philadelphia is on its way to having one of the first grid-scale urban energy storage systems in the U.S., making it a leader and a model that others will want to emulate,” said Audrey Zibelman, President and CEO, Viridity Energy.  “We are proud to partner with Jefferson as they are showing true vision in pursuing a new distributed generation resource within downtown Philadelphia that will contribute to grid reliability and carbon reduction.  Large hospitals and research oriented academic campuses are by nature some of the biggest energy users out there, which offers up a host of opportunities for savvy administrators to save huge sums by managing their resources more strategically.”

Jefferson recently acquired one-third of the electricity supply from the 102 megawatt Locust Ridge II wind power project developed by Iberdrola Renewables and located in Schuylkill County, PA.  Jefferson has been seeking ways to optimize this intermittent resource and maximize the value of wind energy, as its output will vary in ways that will not match variations in either Jefferson’s electricity usage or in wholesale power prices.

“We are pleased to take the next step in reducing the environmental footprint of Jefferson Hospitals and continuing to be an institutional leader in Philadelphia,” said Ron Bowlan, VP and Chief Facilities Officer at Jefferson.  “Our newly acquired wind resources provide a vast amount of clean energy to help power our facilities.  We are excited about bringing Viridity Energy on board to help us optimize this intermittent resource and to help ensure we are most efficient between our generating assets and energy consumption.”

The development enhances the potential for Jefferson’s Center City Campus to become a key building block in a potential Center City microgrid that can help reduce the risk and cost of power outages in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, increase the use of clean local energy resources, protect against volatile electricity prices, and create environmental and economic development benefits for the city and region.

Viridity Energy is already working with other institutional leaders in the region, such as Drexel University and SEPTA on energy optimization projects and is in discussion with the Center City District about how to include many downtown commercial buildings in a larger local grid.  Viridity Energy has also partnered with the University of California, San Diego to optimize its distributed resources, such as photovoltaics, with battery and chilled water storage, dispatchable generation, such as cogeneration and gas turbines, and demand side management capabilities to transform its portfolio of buildings into a unified, dispatchable energy asset.

Approval of Market-Based Demand Response Compensation Rule likely to open new markets and to accelerate deployment of new technologies

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA – March 15, 2011 – Viridity Energy, a company leading the next generation of distributed energy resource management, today commended the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on its decision to establish just and reasonable compensation to customers, who provide demand response services to the electric grid.

“The Commission’s decision recognizes the value demand response provides to the nation’s electric grid and to customers,” said Audrey Zibelman, President and CEO of Viridity Energy. “The decision empowers customers to take control of their electric bills and to provide a service that enhances the reliability of the grid while improving the competitiveness of electric markets.”

The recent FERC ruling will encourage customers to be more engaged in energy markets, promote efficiency and facilitate the broader adoption of demand response, which has proven to be a valuable resource for maintaining grid reliability and price stability. Demand response participants will be compensated for their engagement at the same price that generators are paid, referred to as the locational marginal price (LMP).

“The rule adopted by the Commission recognizes that demand response is a valuable service provided by customers to both the electric grid and to other users and in turn will provide the incentives for such service to flourish,” added Zibelman. “Although it may be hard to see the direct implications today, in time we will see that this decision is as important as any in the Commission’s distinguished history including the decision to open up the energy markets via open access.”

Viridity Energy is paving the way for a new generation of demand response through its innovative distributed demand management software system and services, which transform large energy consumers into 24/7 virtual power plants. The company works with large institutions such as college campuses, federal and municipal complexes, military bases, transit systems, industrial companies and hospitals to optimize their portfolios of buildings and energy investments by creating unified power assets. Viridity Energy and Axion Power International Among First Active Resources Participating in the PJM Interconnection Regulation Market

Press Release: Con Edison Solutions and Viridity Energy Join Forces to Expand Beyond Demand Response

Press Release: Viridity Energy Developing Unique Program Using Energy Storage to Optimize Wind Energy at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals

Press Release: Viridity Energy Anticipates Accelerated Growth for Demand Response Market from FERC Ruling

These power assets are then sold in real-time into the wholesale energy market, allowing facility operators to maximize the monetization of their building and energy investments. By using resources more efficiently and controlling their energy load, large energy consumers become active participants in reducing energy consumption, optimizing energy resources and balancing the electric grid.

Press Release: Viridity Energy Raises Series B Financing to Support the Deployment of its Next-Generation Dynamic Demand Management Technology

Viridity Energy Raises Series B Financing to Support the Deployment of its Next-Generation Dynamic Demand Management Technology

Braemar Energy Ventures and Intel Capital Join as Investors

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – January 10, 2011 – Viridity Energy, a company leading the next generation of distributed energy resource management, announced its Series B funding led by Braemar Energy Ventures (“Braemar”) and joined by Intel Capital. The financing round will further accelerate the commercial growth of the company’s innovative, real-time dynamic demand management platform, allowing Viridity Energy to increase its market exposure and further develop channel relationships. In addition, Braemar’s Scott DePasquale will join Viridity Energy’s board of directors.

“Braemar and Intel Capital represent the best of energy venture capital and technology innovation,” said Audrey Zibelman, president and chief executive officer of Viridity Energy. “Braemar’s long-standing experience in the sector, along with Intel’s deep networking domain expertise will help Viridity Energy transform customer participation in the power industry. Working with these leaders will further enable us to drive growth of the dynamic demand management industry.”

“Braemar is excited to be part of such a promising technology,” said Scott DePasquale, partner at Braemar Energy Ventures. “Viridity Energy’s next generation of demand response technology is beneficial on many levels: cutting the energy costs of large facilities by allowing owners to better monetize their energy load in ways that have not before been possible, while supplying unused energy back into the grid. Viridity Energy’s unique, real-time software represents a vibrant addition to the industry.”

Braemar Energy Ventures has a strong record of successful energy efficiency and grid optimization investments. The firm was an early investor in demand response company EnerNOC (NASDAQ: ENOC), which completed a successful initial public offering in May 2007. It also invested in high-power lithium ion battery supplier A123 Systems (NASDAQ: AONE) whose initial public offering was the largest of 2009. Braemar and Intel Capital are currently investors in Grid Net, a provider of real-time Smart Grid and Smart Home software platforms to utilities, partners and customers.

“Viridity Energy’s technology aligns very well with Intel’s vision of smart energy management based on dynamic, real time optimization of multiple sources of information,” said Steve Eichenlaub, Managing Director, Intel Capital. “We see Viridity Energy as a key player in advancing the concept of intelligent energy management and are pleased to become an investor at this stage in their growth.”
